The Eudora mail client was a standalone product formerly
offered by Qualcomm Inc. Qualcomm has discontinued all
development and support of Eudora, so we can no longer provide
any official support of it ourselves.
Installation
Visit the Eudora Download Site
to retrieve the
version of Eudora for your computer. Launch the
Setup or Install program to install the package
and then return here to begin configuration.
Getting Started
When you start Eudora for the first time, you'll be prompted
with the option to license (pay for) your copy. We expect
that you'll be using it for free, so click OK to continue.
New Account Wizard
The "New Account Wizard" will show up next. Go ahead and click
OK.
Account Settings
You won't want to use the wizard to set up your U-Mail account,
so you'll specify the setting on this screen as:
| Skip directly to advanced account setup: |
[checked] |
and click Finish.
Important Notice
The Qualcomm folks want to warn you that by using the free version
of their software you don't get some of their advanced features.
Click OK here to acknowledge this.
Getting Started
Now you can finally get started configuring Eudora for use
with your U-Mail account. From the Tools menu select
Options... to bring up the Getting Started screen.
Here you'll want to specify the settings as follows:
| Real Name: |
[your name] |
| Return Address: |
UCSBnetID@umail.ucsb.edu |
| Username: |
UCSBnetID |
| Mail Server (Incoming): |
incoming.umail.ucsb.edu |
| SMTP Server (Outgoing): |
outgoing.umail.ucsb.edu |
| Allow authentication |
[checked] |
Note:
The information we provide here works for most internet service
providers. A few, however, require that you use their server
for outgoing mail (SMTP). If you're unable to send outgoing mail
you'll need to contact your service provider to get the name of
an approved outgoing mail server.
Checking Mail
Next, select the Checking Mail section and make sure
that the settings match these:
| Mail Server: |
incoming.umail.ucsb.edu |
| Login Name: |
UCSBnetID |
| Check for mail every ____ minute(s) |
0 |
| Don't check without a network connection |
[not checked] |
| Don't check when using battery |
[not checked] |
| Send on check |
[checked] |
| Save password |
[checked] |
| Secure Sockets when Receiving |
Required, Alternate Port |
Incoming Mail
The next section you'll want to modify is
Incoming Mail. Make sure the settings are configured
as follows:
| Server configuration: |
IMAP |
| IMAP Mailbox Location Prefix: |
[blank] |
| For new mail download: |
Minimal headers only |
| When I delete a message: |
Mark it as deleted |
| Authentication style: |
Passwords |
Sending Mail
The last few settings you need to change
are located under the Sending Mail section.
On this screen you'll want to change the settings
so they look like this:
| Return address: |
UCSBnetID@umail.ucsb.edu |
| Domain to add to unqualified addresses: |
[blank] |
| SMTP server: |
outgoing.umail.ucsb.edu |
| SMTP Relay Personality: |
None |
| Allow Authentication |
[checked] |
| Immediate send |
[checked] |
| Send on check |
[checked] |
| Secure Sockets when Sending |
Required, Alternate Port |
Finishing Up
That's all there is to it. Click OK and you'll be ready
to begin using Eudora with your U-Mail account.
