The MacOS X Mail program is bundled with the MacOS X operating system. It features fast IMAP mail access, automatic junk-mail filtering, tracking conversation "threads", and easy mail attachment handling. See Apple's page for more details.

Installation

Mail comes pre-installed with every installation of the Mac OS X. Only versions 10.3 (Panther) and later are supported for use with U-Mail.

Account Information

To begin setting up Mac OS Mail, launch the program and go to the boldface menu in the upper left corner of your screen labeled Mail. Select Preferences... from this menu and click on the Accounts icon. In this window ensure that the Account Information section is selected.

In this window fill in the fields as follows:
Account Type: IMAP
Description: U-Mail
Email Address: UCSBnetID@umail.ucsb.edu
Full Name: [your name]
Incoming Mail Server: incoming.umail.ucsb.edu
User name: UCSBnetID
Password: [password]

Outgoing Mail Server

In the Outgoing Mail Server section at the bottom of this window, select Add Server.... In this window specify the following settings:

Outgoing mail server: outgoing.umail.ucsb.edu
Server Port: 465
Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) [checked]
Authentication: [your password]
Username: UCSBnetID

Note: The information we provide here works for most internet service providers. A few, however, require that you use their server for outgoing mail (SMTP). If you're unable to send outgoing mail you'll need to contact your service provider to get the name of an approved outgoing mail server.

Once you have done this click OK.

Next, you'll need to select the Special Mailboxes section. On this window fill in the following:

Store draft on the server: [checked]
Store sent messages on the server: [checked]
Delete sent messages when: Never
Store junk messages on the server: [checked]
Delete junk messages when: One week old
Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox: [checked]
Store deleted messages on the server: [checked]
Permanently erase deleted messages: One week old

Advanced Settings

Finally, you'll need to select the Advanced section. section. On this window fill in the following:

Enable this account: [checked]
Include when automatically checking for new mail: [checked]
Compact mailboxes automatically: [checked]
Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes: [not checked]
IMAP path prefix: inbox
Port: 993

Finishing Up

At this point you can click the red "close" button at the upper left-hand corner of the window. Click Save when asked if you want to save your settings.

To begin using Mail, simply click the Get Mail icon in the main window. You're now ready to go!
