The Microsoft Outlook Express mail and news access program is integrated with the Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser. It features IMAP mail access, easy mail attachment handling, HTML-based messaging, as well as other advanced features.

Installation

The latest version of Outlook Express for Windows can be downloaded as part of the Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser. Visit Microsoft's Internet Explorer site for details.

Starting the Account Setup Wizard

After installing Outlook Express, click on the Tools menu and select the Accounts... option. Doing this will open the following window.

The first thing you'll need to do is create an e-mail account. To do this, click on the Add button and select Mail. At this point the Windows "Internet Connection Wizard" will open to assist you.

Your Name

You'll first be prompted to enter your name as you would like it to appear on e-mail correspondence.

After you've done this click Next.

Internet E-Mail Address

Here you'll need to enter your U-Mail address.

Once you've done this you can again click Next.

E-Mail Server Names

At this point you need to specify e-mail server information.

Select IMAP from the pull-down menu, then fill in the server settings as follows:

Incoming mail (IMAP) server: incoming.umail.ucsb.edu
Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: outgoing.umail.ucsb.edu

Note: The information we provide here works for most internet service providers. A few, however, require that you use their server for outgoing mail (SMTP). If you're unable to send outgoing mail you'll need to contact your service provider to get the name of an approved outgoing mail server.

Click Next once you've entered these settings.

Internet Mail Logon

At this point you will need to configure the log-on settings for your U-Mail account. These settings are as follows:

Account name: UCSBnetID
Password: [your password]
Remember password [checked]
Log on using Secure Password Authentication [not checked]

Once you've filled these in click Next and then Finish.

Additional Configuration

You're now done with the settings wizard, but there's still more to do. At this point you'll see a list of your internet accounts. Highlight the one labeled "incoming.umail.ucsb.edu" and click Properties.

General Settings

On the General tab, change the settings to ensure that they're configured as follows:

Mail Account name U-Mail
Name: [your name]
Organization: [blank]
E-mail address: UCSBnetID@umail.ucsb.edu
Reply address: [blank]
Include this account when receiving
mail or synchronizing
[checked]

Server Settings

On the Servers settings tab, make sure your settings match these.

My incoming mail server is a ____ server IMAP
Incoming mail (IMAP): incoming.umail.ucsb.edu
Outgoing mail (SMTP): outgoing.umail.ucsb.edu
Account name: UCSBnetID
Password: [your password]
Remember password [checked]
Log on using Secure Password Authentication [not checked]
My server requires authentication [checked]

Next you'll need to click the Outgoing Mail Server Settings button.

Outgoing Mail Server Settings

The Outgoing Mail Server settings must be specified as follows:

Use same settings as my incoming mail server [checked]

Once this setting has been confirmed click OK.

Advanced Settings

On the Advanced settings tab you'll need to mark the "secure connection" checkboxes so that your settings look like this:

Outgoing mail (SMTP): 465
This server requires a secure connection (SSL) [checked]
Incoming mail (IMAP): 993
This server requires a secure connection (SSL) [checked]

Now you can move on to the IMAP settings tab. In this window you'll want the settings to look like this:

Root folder path: inbox.
Check for new messages in all folders [checked]
Store special folders on IMAP server [checked]
Sent Items path: sent-mail
Drafts path: drafts

Finishing Up

Click OK once you're done, and then Close on the "Internet Accounts" window.
