Pine is an e-mail client that provides fast text-based access to your U-Mail account. Although the Pine mail client is based on older technology, its great for power users that want quick-and-dirty access to their messages.

We provide instructions here for the Windows version of Pine. Contact our help desk if you're interested in the configuration details for MacOS X or other UNIX systems.

Installation

Visit the PC-Pine Download Site to retrieve a recent version of PC-Pine. Launch the setup_pine program to begin installation.

Configuration Setup

Once the PC-Pine files have been copied to your computer, the installation routine will start the PC-Pine configuration setup. The fields on this screen should be specified as follows:
Use configuration file stored on IMAP server [not checked]
Use local configuration file [checked]
Configuration file name [default]

Mail Server Settings

Next you'll need to specify the mail server configuration. These settings should look like this:

Personal Name: [your name]
Email Address UCSBnetID@umail.ucsb.edu
Mail Server: incoming.umail.ucsb.edu/ssl
This server is an IMAP server [checked]
This server is a POP3 server [not checked]
Login name (optional): UCSBnetID
SMTP server outgoing.umail.ucsb.edu:587/tls/user=UCSBnetID

When you're done here click OK and complete the installation.

Editing your PINERC File

Unfortunately all of the necessary settings aren't included in the settings screen. As a result you'll need to edit the PC-Pine configuration file in a text editor (such as Notepad) and make a few minor changes.

The configuration file is in the location you specified in the first step of this process, and is typically located in C:\Program Files\PC-Pine\pinerc. Once you've opened the file you'll need to check and correct the following settings:

personal-name [your name]
user-id UCSBnetID
user-domain umail.ucsb.edu
smtp-server outgoing.umail.ucsb.edu:587/tls/user=UCSBnetID
inbox-path {incoming.umail.ucsb.edu/user=UCSBnetID/ssl}
default-fcc sent-mail
default-saved-msg-folder saved-messages
postponed-folder postponed-msgs
folder-collections U-Mail {incoming.umail.ucsb.edu/ssl/user=UCSBnetID}inbox.[]
disable-these-authenticators PLAIN

Make sure to save these changes when you're done editing this file.

Finishing Up

That's all there is to it. You can now start PC-Pine and begin using it with your U-Mail account.
