Account Deactivation

About the Deactivation Process

U-Mail accounts are provided by the University for registered graduates, undergrads, and UCSB Extension Open Unversity students only. If you do not register for a particular quarter (including summer), you will have 13 months to re-register before your account is deactivated.

You will receive six e-mail notifications before your account is deactivated, beginning six months after you've been separated from the University and increasing in frequency until one week prior to deactivation of your account.

Preparing for Deactivation

Before your account is deactivated we recommend that you do the following:
  • If you don't already have one, obtain a new e-mail account with an off-campus provider. Yahoo and Gmail are popular options.
  • Prepare your account for deactivation using the management tools within WebAccess:
    • Before your account is closed, have messages sent to your U-Mail address redirected to your new address. This can be set up using the 'Mail Forwarding' utility.
    • After your account has been closed, messages sent to your U-Mail address will bounce back to the sender with an "account no longer active" message. We will include your forwarding address in these bounce messages so your correspondents will know how to contact you.
  • If you'd like to save any messages in your U-Mail account, use the "Download Folders" utilty within WebAccess.
  • You may want to download any files that you have saved in your U-Storage account. This can be done with the WebAccess 'U-Storage Manager'.

Account Extensions

  • Undergraduates may have their accounts extended in a small number of cases. If you believe you need an extension to your U-Mail account, download and print the Undergrad Account Extension Request form. Bring the completed form to our offices within ten working days before your account is scheduled for deactivation.

  • Graduate student account extensions are managed by the Graduate Division. For information on account extensions you'll need to contact the Graduate Division Academic Services office.

  • Extension student accounts are not eligible for extensions.

Feel free to contact our Help Desk if you have any further questions about account deactivation.
